Sukabumi, ummi.ac.id - In a recent groundbreaking initiative, the Universitas Muhammadiyah Sukabumi (UMMI) has taken a bold step towards promoting environmental sustainability and public health through its Chemistry Program. The Faculty of Science and Technology (SAINTEK) hosted an engaging community service activity focusing on the "Production of Biodiesel and Hand Washing Soap." This event, which unfolded at the university's Chemistry Laboratory, saw a significant turnout, including lecturers, students from the Chemistry Program, and high school students, all gathered on a bright Saturday, 2nd of March 2024.

The primary goal of this initiative was to underscore the importance of hand hygiene as a crucial measure in halting the spread of diseases. Leveraging the bounty of natural resources, such as coconut oil, the UMMI team, under the guidance of Dr. Dik Dik Mulyadi, M.P.Kim., a revered lecturer in the Chemistry Program, unveiled an innovative formula for hand washing soap. This new product stands out for being safe, eco-friendly, and highly effective against bacteria.

Participants were taken through a comprehensive workshop, starting from the basics of soap making to the intricate chemical processes involved, such as saponification. Additionally, they were educated on using natural ingredients for their antibacterial properties, making the session both informative and practical.

This initiative is a testament to UMMI's dedication to harnessing science and technology for societal welfare. It reflects a broader commitment to fostering community involvement in sustainable practices and paves the way for future innovations that will benefit society. Through such endeavors, UMMI sets a sterling example of how academic institutions can play a pivotal role in environmental conservation and public health promotion.
